It is with deep sorrow and heartfelt reverence that we announce the passing of Terry Alan Hayes, a beloved father, grandfather, and faithful servant of his community, who passed away peacefully on March 19, 2026, at the age of 76, surrounded by his children and grandchildren at MyMichigan Medical Center in Alma, Michigan.
Born on April 28, 1949, in Ithaca, Michigan, Terry was the son of Fred J. Hayes and Bernice Emma Durfee Hayes. He was raised on the family farm, where he developed the strong values of faith, hard work, and devotion to family that would guide him throughout his life. A 1967 graduate of Ithaca High School, Terry went on to serve honorably in the National Guard for four years, demonstrating his early commitment to service and responsibility.
On December 27, 1969, Terry married the love of his life, Helen Collie. Together, they built a life grounded in unwavering love, faith, and dedication to their family. Terry worked diligently throughout his life in various roles, including as a mechanic, truck driver, and custodian, eventually retiring from custodial maintenance at the Gratiot-Isabella County RESD. In every position, he was known for his reliability, humility, and tireless work ethic.
A man of deep and abiding faith, Terry was baptized in 1976 and remained a devoted member of the Ithaca Seventh-day Adventist Church, where he served faithfully in many roles. His faith was evident not only in his words, but in the compassion, kindness, and steady presence he offered to others.
Terry will be remembered as a quiet pillar of strength—a dependable and loving presence who anchored his family with wisdom, patience, and care. He found immense joy in his children and grandchildren, faithfully attending their events and milestones, often capturing those cherished moments on camera. His greatest happiness came from simply being present for those he loved.
He is lovingly remembered by his children, grandchildren, siblings, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, as well as several siblings and his parents.
The family extends their sincere gratitude to the compassionate staff at MyMichigan Medical Center for their care and support, and to all who offered prayers and comfort during this time.
Though he will be deeply missed, Terry’s legacy of faith, love, and quiet strength will live on in all who knew him.
