It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Matt Hinkin, a cherished meteorologist, mentor, and devoted member of the East Tennessee community, who passed away at the age of 62. Over a remarkable career spanning more than three decades at WATE-TV, Matt became a trusted voice for weather forecasting, guiding viewers safely through storms, natural disasters, and everyday weather with skill, professionalism, and a reassuring presence.
Affectionately recognized by viewers who would greet him with, “Hey Matt! What’s the weather?” Hinkin’s presence on 6 News for 31 years went far beyond meteorology. He was a devoted member of the community, frequently visiting local schools, supporting civic events, and inspiring young people with his passion for science and education. His work as co-host of the Saturday morning show New at the Zoo alongside Tim Adams introduced generations of children to the wonders of wildlife and even took him on an educational journey to Africa during its ninth season.
Matt’s career reflected dedication, calm leadership, and excellence under pressure. He guided East Tennessee through historic events such as the Blizzard of ’93 and the Gatlinburg wildfires, earning widespread admiration from viewers and colleagues alike. A native of Lawton, Oklahoma, he earned a Bachelor of Science at Kansas State University and an Atmospheric Science degree from the University of Kansas. Before joining WATE in 1990, he began his broadcasting career at KSNF-TV in Joplin, Missouri, and KSNT-TV in Topeka, Kansas.
Beyond his professional achievements, Matt faced personal challenges with courage and grace. Living with Parkinson’s Disease, he dedicated himself to raising awareness and providing support through the PJ Parkinson’s Support group. He was a devout Christian whose kindness, generosity, and selflessness left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. Matt was deeply loved by his family, including his late wife Deborah, with whom he shared 28 years of marriage, and by countless friends, colleagues, and community members throughout the region.
Matt Hinkin’s legacy is one of service, mentorship, and inspiration. Through his work, his guidance, and his compassion, he touched the lives of many, leaving an enduring impression on East Tennessee. As the community mourns his passing, it also celebrates a life lived with purpose, dedication, and heart. His memory will continue to live on in the countless lives he influenced.
