It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Matt Hinkin, beloved meteorologist, community leader, and cherished member of East Tennessee, who died at the age of 62. Over a distinguished career spanning more than three decades with WATE-TV, Matt became a trusted voice for weather forecasts, guiding viewers through storms, natural disasters, and everyday weather alike.
Known affectionately for the phrase, “Hey Matt! What’s the weather?” Hinkin’s presence was a fixture on 6 News for 31 years. He was more than a meteorologist; he was a devoted member of the community, frequently visiting local schools, supporting events across the region, and inspiring young people with his passion for science and the natural world. He co-hosted the popular Saturday morning show “New at the Zoo” alongside Tim Adams, which introduced generations of children to wildlife and even took him on a journey to Africa during its ninth season.
Matt’s career was marked by dedication, skill, and calm leadership during challenging times. He guided the community through historic events, including the Blizzard of ’93 and the Gatlinburg wildfires, earning the trust and admiration of viewers and colleagues alike. A native of Lawton, Oklahoma, he earned a Bachelor of Science at Kansas State University and an Atmospheric Science Degree from the University of Kansas, and began his career at KSNF-TV in Joplin, Missouri, and KSNT-TV in Topeka, Kansas, before joining WATE in 1990.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Matt faced personal challenges with courage and grace. He lived with Parkinson’s Disease for several years and dedicated himself to raising awareness and support through the PJ Parkinson’s Support group. He was a devout Christian whose kindness, selflessness, and generosity of spirit left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He was deeply loved by his family, including his late wife Deborah, with whom he shared 28 years of marriage, and by countless friends and colleagues throughout the region.
Matt Hinkin’s legacy is one of service, dedication, and inspiration. He touched the lives of many through his work, his mentorship, and his compassion. The East Tennessee community mourns his loss, and his memory will live on in the countless hearts he impacted. May he rest in eternal peace.
