Marie West California Death, Obituary: Distinguished Navy Veteran Has Passed Away

With profound sorrow and deep respect, we mourn the passing of Marie West, a distinguished Navy veteran and one of the last surviving members of the Greatest Generation, who departed this life at the remarkable age of 103.

Marie West answered her nation’s call during one of history’s most defining moments—World War II—with unwavering dedication and quiet strength. Leaving the familiarity of home, she traveled to Hunter College in New York City, where she trained as part of a pioneering division of the United States Navy. This newly established program empowered women to serve on the home front, playing a critical role in supporting the war effort and enabling more men to serve overseas.

Her service continued at Moffett Field in California, where she undertook duties that were both physically demanding and vitally important. Marie worked with Navy blimps—handling their operations and contributing to the repair and maintenance of essential components. She approached every responsibility with diligence, humility, and resolve. For Marie, no task was too great, and none too small. Like many women of her era, she did not seek recognition; she served because duty required it.

Marie’s commitment to honoring history and those who served never diminished. In 2024, at the age of 102, she journeyed to Europe to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Her presence was a powerful tribute not only to the soldiers who fought bravely on the front lines but also to the countless women whose contributions, sacrifices, and courage helped secure victory.

Throughout her long and meaningful life, Marie West embodied the highest ideals of patriotism, resilience, and selflessness. She belonged to a generation that answered the call without hesitation, shaping the course of history through steadfast service and sacrifice.

As we remember Marie West, we honor a legacy defined not by words, but by action—by a life lived in service to others and to country. Her story will continue to inspire future generations to serve with courage and humility.

May her memory forever remain a blessing, and may her remarkable legacy never be forgotten.
