It is with profound respect and heartfelt sorrow that we mourn the passing of Joseph C. Fitzsimmons, a distinguished Normandy veteran whose life spanned a full century, defined by courage, dedication, and quiet sacrifice. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, just three weeks shy of his 101st birthday.
Affectionately known as “Fitzy,” Joseph Fitzsimmons served as a Technical Sergeant, flight engineer, and crew chief aboard the legendary C-47 Skytrain with the 437th Troop Carrier Group. From the skies above war-torn Europe, he carried paratroopers into battle, towed gliders into the unknown, and executed missions where each flight brought the possibility of never returning. His bravery, precision, and steadfastness exemplified the highest ideals of service and duty.
On D-Day, Fitzy flew into darkness over Normandy, delivering the first wave of airborne troops into occupied territory—men who would fight for every inch of freedom on the ground below. He continued to serve through southern France, across Holland, over the Rhine, and into the frozen hardships of the Battle of the Bulge. During that desperate battle, he dropped vital supplies to the surrounded 101st Airborne Division, sustaining men who were outnumbered, cold, and determined to hold the line.
For his valor, Joseph Fitzsimmons was awarded the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters—a testament to the missions flown into danger, the lives supported from above, and the unflinching duty he carried without hesitation. Yet, upon returning home, he sought no recognition. Instead, he embraced the opportunities that lay ahead. Through the G.I. Bill, he earned his degree, built a career, and devoted 56 years to his work, leaving a lasting impact on those around him.
Joseph Fitzsimmons was a man of his generation: humble, courageous, and unwavering in his sense of responsibility. Though he did not seek to be remembered, his life, deeds, and legacy demand our honor today.
As we reflect on his extraordinary life, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his courage and character. May his memory serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by a generation of heroes. God bless Joseph C. Fitzsimmons, an American hero, always.
He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever honored.
