With great sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of District Attorney Investigator John Sunia, a dedicated public servant whose life was defined by service, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to his community. John devoted over two decades to protecting and serving the citizens of Oxnard, leaving behind a legacy that will not be forgotten.
John began his law enforcement career with the Oxnard Police Department in 2003, where he served with distinction until his retirement in 2023 as a Patrol Sergeant. During his tenure, he held critical roles as both a Narcotics Detective and a Major Crimes Detective, earning a reputation for his exceptional investigative abilities, professionalism, and collaborative spirit. Known throughout the department and the broader community for his approachable nature and strong teamwork, John was widely respected by colleagues and community members alike.
Following his retirement from the police department, John continued his service by joining the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office as an investigator. Assigned to the Ventura County Fentanyl Overdose Crimes Unit, he brought with him a wealth of experience, deep institutional knowledge, and strong relationships across law enforcement agencies. His commitment to combating the fentanyl crisis and reducing overdose deaths demonstrated his enduring dedication to public safety and the well-being of the community he called home.
A true hometown hero, John was raised in Oxnard and graduated from Channel Islands High School, where he excelled as a student-athlete, starting three years in both baseball and football. The values of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance that he developed during those years became hallmarks of his professional life. He furthered his education by earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice Management, strengthening his foundation for a distinguished career in law enforcement.
John is survived by his loving family, to whom he was deeply devoted. We extend our heartfelt condolences to them during this profoundly difficult time. We stand ready to support them while respecting their privacy as they grieve this tremendous loss.
