It is with deep sadness that I confirm the passing of Valma Matthews, a valued member of our Bonteheuwel community, following a tragic accident yesterday on Bonteheuwel Avenue. The incident, which occurred shortly after 12 noon, was a horrific and unforeseen event that has left the community reeling.
Emergency services, including Fire and Rescue, Metro Police, and SAPS personnel, responded immediately. Ambulance services were engaged to ensure that Valma received urgent medical care. She was transported to Somerset Hospital for treatment; however, despite the efforts of medical personnel, she sadly succumbed to the injuries sustained, and her passing was confirmed just after 6pm yesterday.
In the aftermath of this tragedy, both the Matthews family and the driver involved have been engaged and supported. It is clear that this was a freak accident with no intent to cause harm. Both families are deeply affected, experiencing trauma and grief as they come to terms with the events of the day. The driver remained at the scene and has been cooperative throughout, demonstrating support in these difficult circumstances.
Valma Matthews’ passing has sent shockwaves through our community. She was a respected and cherished resident whose presence and life touched many around her. Her loss is felt not only by her family but by the broader community, which has been united in shock, grief, and concern for those affected.
